about

This is a re-release, in digital format, of New Piano Music from a Sussex Shore originally released on CD in 2003, the liner notes are taken from the original CD release. We'd like thank all the composers and performers for the opportunity to re-release this.

Stephanie Cant writes
I had lived in Sussex for 25 years before I left to go to live in Durham in 1998. I had been a member of New Music Brighton from its inception and many of my compositions were performed at NMB concerts. Hoping to keep in touch with the group, I wrote to all members in the summer of 1999 with an invitation to compose a short piano piece for me which I would then include in a lunchtime concert.

During the subsequent year I received enough compositions. most of which were indeed newly written. to add up to a 50-minute recital. The performance of these works took place at a well attended concert at the Chapel Royal, Brighton in May 2001 with all the composers present. Following this concert, discussions began regarding a possible CD of these works. At the same time. a number of these piano pieces were chosen for a workshop at the Farnham Festival - New Music for Young People. This workshop, which I directed with the assistance of the composers. Took place at The Maltings. Farnham in March 2003. I was delighted to be invited to include the duet I composed for that occasion on this CD.
