about

The title Make Waves was chosen both in response to Stephanie Cant’s suggestion of the sea as a source of inspiration and in tribute to her daughter. Kate Cooper, whose achievements, in spite of her tragically brief life. are ‘making waves’ still.

The left-hand part uses only the whole tone scale which, lacking a tonal centre. perhaps gives an impression of wateriness. (A nine-year-old pupil of mine called this scale ‘the water scale’.) The right hand plays only material derived from a string duo composed, also at the age of nine, by Kate Cooper.

The motive force of the piece is generated by the tension between the recurrent falling perfect fifth motif from the duo and the different tonality of the whole tone scale.
