about

Michael Stephenson Three Owen Poems III. I Saw His Round Mouth’s Crimson

Bright, bursting treble string chord clusters start this poem set to music, representing the starbursts of shells. The barrage of sound subsides only to start up again then subside once more, leading into a hymn-like song about the death of one young soldier. Clarinet and voice form a gentle duet - a duet ‘in unison’ - a human earthbound element set against the cold, ethereal world of the spirits. But the ghost that trawls these godforsaken trenches is no holy ghost. As death quietly approaches, the soprano voice ends the song unaccompanied.

lyrics

III. I Saw His Round Mouth’s Crimson
[I saw his round mouth’s crimson deepen as it fell],
Like a Sun, in his last deep hour;
Watched the magnificent recession of farewell,
Clouding, half gleam, half glower,
And a last splendour burn the heavens of his cheek.
And in his eyes
The cold stars lighting, very old and bleak,
In different skies.
