about

Ric Graebner The Magic Bass Flute

The Magic Bass Flute was written for Maria Lavista during a stay in Mexico in 1981. It exploits a number of special techniques, intended to show off the virtuosity of the performer, such as multiphonics and simultaneous playing and singing, but also, as the title suggests, there is an underlying Classical idea - indeed, the tune first played by the magic flute in Mozart’s so-named opera. This opposition was partly inspired by my contradictory impression of Mexico itself, at the same time exotic and Spanish Baroque, which slightly surprised me. At the formal level, one could imagine that this piece represents the moment in The Magic Flute between Tamino’s first attempts to play and the perfected outcome - Mozart’s C major tune, heard at the end. A demystifying jeu d’esprit around the fact that instrumental skill is normally the result of hard work, and not the instant gratifying experience we get in the opera.

The present performance by Anne Hodgson is the first in Europe as far as the composer is aware.
